Arty, Party, Spicy…

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 23/02/2012

We’ve found some great free things going on this weekend, with two interesting new exhibitions right on our doorstep. We hope there’s something to tickle your fancy, but as always check out the links on the right of the web page to get some more ideas for places to visit for free in our neighbourhood.

The decoration and repair work started in December will be finished by Friday, and so this weekend you might notice a brighter, shinier launderette when you’re doing your laundry or dropping off a service wash. Thanks go to James and Mark who have done a brilliant job in painting, carpentry and electrical work for several nights after the launderette has closed and into the wee small hours.

Our lovely colleague Mina, who most of you who use the launderette on Thursday and at weekends will know, has been off work for just over a month due to ill health. She underwent surgery on Wednesday and we’re pleased to say that the surgery went well and she’s now recovering. We hope to see Mina fully fit and back at the launderette in around six weeks.

That’s the news from Launderette Towers, here’s the stuff you want to know…

Rich Mix has a new photographic exhibition, ‘The Curry Chefs of Brick Lane’, by Jeremy Freedman in its Mezzanine Gallery. The exhibition is a celebration of these proud chefs – “working away like those engineers below deck on the great steam ships of old, they are the unseen and unsung heroes of Brick Lane’s Curry Mile.”  These are the previously unseen faces and untold stories that reveal the personal narratives of Spitalfields’ Bengali residents. The exhibition is open from 10am until the centre closes and runs until 31st March. For more details visit the Rich Mix website.

A Delia Special…

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 21/02/2012

The launderette is having the final touches of its smartening up this week, with the decorators James and Mark returning for the next few nights. Gaps will be filled in, the lighting sorted out and the sticky front door will be smoothed! As James and Mark will be beavering away mostly after hours disruption will be minimal and their excellent work will appear in daylight as if by magic!

Now, as promised, here’s St. Delia’s blessed pancake recipe – easy, tasty and too good for just one day a year!

Delia Smith’s Pancake Recipe

Equipment: A good solid 7 inch (18 cm) or 8 inch (20 cm) frying pan, some kitchen paper, greaseproof paper, a palette knife or flexible pan slice, and a ladle.

Ingredients: 4oz (110g) Plain Flour; A Pinch of Salt; 2 Large Eggs; 7 Fluid Oz (200ml) Milk mixed with 3 Fluid Oz (75ml) Water; 2oz (50g) Butter.

To Serve: Caster Sugar, Lemon Juice & Lemon Wedges.

Method: First of all sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl with the sieve held high above the bowl so the flour gets an airing. Now make a well in the centre of the flour and break the eggs into it. Then begin whisking the eggs – any sort of whisk or even a fork will do – incorporating any bits of flour from around the edge of the bowl as you do so.

Next, gradually add small quantities of the milk and water mixture, still whisking (don’t worry about any lumps as they will eventually disappear as you whisk). When all the liquid has been added, use a rubber spatula to scrape any elusive bits of flour from around the edge into the centre, then whisk once more until the batter is smooth, with the consistency of thin cream. Now melt the butter in the pan. Spoon 2 tablespoons of it into the batter and whisk it in, then pour the rest into a bowl and use it when needed to lubricate the pan, using a wodge of kitchen paper to smear it round.

Now get the pan really hot, then turn the heat down to medium and, to start with, do a test pancake to see if you’re using the correct amount of batter. I find 2 tablespoons about right for a 7 inch (18 cm) pan and 3 tablespoons for an 8 inch (20 cm) pan. It’s also helpful if you spoon the batter into a ladle so it can be poured into the hot pan in one go. As soon as the batter hits the hot pan, tip it around from side to side to get the base evenly coated with batter. It should take only half a minute or so to cook; you can lift the edge with a palette knife to see if it’s tinged gold as it should be. Flip the pancake over with a pan slice or palette knife – the other side will need a few seconds only – then simply slide it out of the pan on to a plate.

Stack the pancakes as you make them between sheets of greaseproof paper on a plate fitted over simmering water, to keep them warm while you make the rest.

To serve, sprinkle each pancake with freshly squeezed lemon juice and caster sugar, fold in half, then in half again to form triangles, or else simply roll them up. Serve sprinkled with a little more sugar and lemon juice and extra sections of lemon.

Quality…

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 16/02/2012

We’ve found a few free things to do this weekend, and although there aren’t too many they’re quality and well worth a look! There are some ongoing events and exhibitions, such as the Imagine Children’s Festival on the Southbank, so if our choices this weekend don’t inspire you check out our recent ‘What’s On’ posts and browse through our links on the right of the web page. Have a great weekend!

The Museum of London has more Dickens related activities this weekend. Dickens’ stories frequently  featured London with the city becoming as much of a character as Oliver, Pip, Little Nell and Mr. Pumblechook. On Saturday 18th February at 1, 2 and 3pm ‘Strolling with Dickens’ tells how Dickens walked the streets of London in search of inspiration for his books. Join the museum’s storyteller for an interactive session as she recreates one of his strolls and brings it to life.  On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th February at 12.30pm and 2.30pm ‘Mapping Dickens’ London’ will help you make a map to guide you through Dickens’ London, and the places he visited for inspiration for his stories. See the Museum of London website for more information.

Gustave Doré - Ludgate Hill

Those are our brief but high quality suggestions for this weekend. Don’t forget that it’s pancake day on Tuesday, and we’ll be posting the Delia Smith pancake recipe that so many of you liked last year!

A bit of launderette news for you too. After a slight break the launderette decoration and improvements will be completed next week so all the annoying unfinished bits will finally be tended to. Hurrah!  Many of you will have heard that Mina was taken ill a few weeks ago, and has not been at work since. She’s doing well and although she will be off work for a little while longer we’re sure to be seeing back at work in the spring. We’ve got two new members of the team, Meryem and Cinnamon, who will be working at weekends and covering for their colleagues holidays and other time off. We’re really proud of our team, which also includes Maire our manager, Ali and Tina, who have always worked hard, but especially so in the past few months.
