Wet Weekend, Washout?

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 27/04/2012

This is one of those rare weeks when we couldn’t find any special event or festival going on locally. Given the lousy weather, (yes, we know we need the rain…), we thought we’d stick to finding things to do indoors. Luckily there are loads of galleries and museums with free admission on our doorstep, all great places to spend a wet weekend – some have fantastic cafes too! There’s such a great variety that we’re sure at least one them will appeal to you, here’s what they have going on:

Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood has four exhibitions running at the moment, alongside its brilliant displays of toys and games through the ages. It also has a great cafe and is a brilliant place to visit for grown-ups too, with or without children!

Geffrye Museum has the exhibition ‘At Home With the World’ as part of the Cultural Olympiad 2012. The room displays of homes through the ages are always fascinating and the cafe is rather good. In the brief spells between showers the gardens are worth a visit too.

Hackney Museum is a great place to discover Hackney and the truths behind many myths. It has great permanent displays and some fascinating temporary exhibitions.

The Museum of London & Museum of London Docklands are great places to spend a wet and dismal day. There are superb exhibits, many hands-on displays and ever-changing exhibitions.

The Ragged School Museum is place to “Experience a slice of Victorian life”! It explores life in the east end as it was more than a century ago.

Rich Mix has fascinating and thought-provoking free exhibitions throughout the year just a short walk from the Boundary Estate.

Whitechapel Gallery currently has six exhibitions running, including the chance to see works from the Government Art Collection.

The Women’s Library current exhibition, ‘All Work and Low Pay’ is a fascinating insight into the history of women and work.

Don’t forget – if you live in Tower Hamlets and have a Tower Hamlets Library or Idea Store card, you can get into the Tower of London for just £1!

Whatever you do we hope you have a good weekend. Bring your washing to us for a service wash and free up some of your time so you can enjoy yourself a bit more!

You may have read that we’ve been selected as one of five finalist in the Creme of Nature 2012 Community Action Award. If we win we will be able to replace the non-working machines, and even upgrade a couple more. We will need your votes, and those of your friends too, so please check back to our site and on our facebook page from 1st May for details of how to vote!
