And the Awards Went To…

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 15/07/2012

As many of you might already know, we came second in the 2012 Community Action Awards organised by Creme of Nature. On Tuesday, 10th July, Maire Glace, our marvellous manager, and the three voluntary directors Jean Locker, Philip Green and Anita Nightingale, travelled to Manchester for the day to collect the £5,000 cheque.

We were awarded with the £5,000 cheque by Nigel McCarthy of Colomer International, sponsors of the Community Action Award, at Victory Outreach Manchester. Victory Outreach were last year’s winners, and we want to thank Paul, Vicky and the rest of their wonderful team for giving us such a warm welcome and a lovely lunch!

The winners of the £10,000 first prize were Store City from Dagenham, and if you’re going to be a runner-up this is the sort of organisation you don’t mind being runners-up to. They distribute free clothing and food parcels to families and individuals who are unable to afford even the most basic of essentials needed to survive. It was good to meet Chris, Danny, Tom & Tony from Store City, and they kindly drove our oversized presentation cheque back to London for us so we didn’t have to grapple with it through Manchester and on the train.

You can find out more about Store City and Victory Outreach via the Creme of Nature Community Action Award website.

Finally we want to thank Chris Crossland at Simply Great Copy for his great work at overseeing the voting, and publicity for the award, and his help and support to us and the others who took part.

The new machine has been ordered and will be installed by 10th August. We will let you know the precise dates within the week, once we’ve heard from the engineers and plumbers. The launderette will have to close for up to two days but we will give you plenty of notice. The whole of the award money will be used on the purchase and installation of the new machine, plus a little bit more!

We’ll be getting some official photos of the award reception, but in the meantime here are a few of our photos:
