We’re more than just a place to wash your clothes in the east end of London, we’re an award winning not-for-profit community enterprise set up by residents for residents in the heart of the first council estate built in the UK. We opened in September 1992 and since then have managed to keep the business running, keeping our costs low and providing employment for local residents. Over the years the neighbourhood has changed – the Shoreditch and Brick Lane are now very trendy and much sought-after places to live – but the ethos of launderette remains the same.

Check out our pages of Boundary Estate history, photographs and local information, plus the useful links to local service providers and national helplines.

The small group of directors who keep the place funded will be spending the next few years trying to raise funds for new machines and renewing our lease to ensure our beautiful launderette continues to play its part at the heart of our community. If you are involved with a charitable organisation or group who would like to donate money to help us reach of goal of purchasing much-needed new machinery please contact us at:

Flamin’ ‘Eck!

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 19/07/2012

There are a lot of free things to do this weekend, most of them on Saturday when the Olympic Torch passes through Tower Hamlets and Hackney. So if you happen to see a crowd of people chasing someone with a lit beacon along Shoreditch High Street at about 3.45 don’t worry! We’ll be open as usual on Saturday although there will be road closures and transport delays. If you’re coming to use the launderette and travelling by bus or car please check the Transport for London website first. Whatever you do this weekend, enjoy it – the BBC weather website is even forecasting sun and warmth for Saturday and Sunday. Whoopee! Don’t forget that a service wash takes the hassle out of doing your laundry and gives you more free time.

On Friday 20th July from 4pm until 9pm Brick Lane will be celebrating becoming ‘Curry Capital 2012’ with a huge free street party. There will be food, live entertainment, family events and, of course, culinary demonstrations. Check out the Tower Hamlets webpage for more details.

Rich Mix hosts its final Snapshots Festival from Midday until late on Saturday 21st July, with free film, exhibitions, music, storytelling, the very best the capital has to offer in up-and-coming performers, arts & crafts workshops for the whole family, a market space and their superb community feast where you can take a dish to share or pay just £1! Some events require pre-booking so please check out the full details on the Rich Mix Snapshots Webpage.

There are loads of events taking place to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Tower Hamlets and Hackney on Saturday July 21st July. Tower Hamlets is holding a party at Stepney Green Park from midday until 5pm, and Hackney celebrates with The One Festival at sites throughout the borough. The Torch will be carried along Shoreditch High Street from around 3.50pm, and will be heading north from Commercial Street towards Kingsland Road. See these links for more information:  Tower Hamlets Torch Relay Route,  Tower Hamlets Torch Relay EventsHackney Torch Relay Route,  Hackney Torch Relay Events,  London 2012 Website – Torch Relay Route

The Shoreditch Festival continues on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd July from midday to 10pm each day, with a whole range of performance art, music, family activities and a great picnic area. Needless to say the Olympic Torch will be making an appearance on Saturday! Get full details from the Shoreditch Festival website.

The Spitalfields International Food Fair kicks off this Saturday, July 21st., and on Sunday July 22nd Spitalfields Farm is hosting a Food Fair from midday until 5pm. There will be fresh farm produce, fruit and vegetables, home-made cakes, food and drink stalls, food growing workshops, cookery demonstrations, donkey rides and the ECO-CHIC Market. Find out more at the Spitalfields International Food Fair webpage.

Arty, Party, Spicy…

Posted by Boundary Community Launderette on 23/02/2012

We’ve found some great free things going on this weekend, with two interesting new exhibitions right on our doorstep. We hope there’s something to tickle your fancy, but as always check out the links on the right of the web page to get some more ideas for places to visit for free in our neighbourhood.

The decoration and repair work started in December will be finished by Friday, and so this weekend you might notice a brighter, shinier launderette when you’re doing your laundry or dropping off a service wash. Thanks go to James and Mark who have done a brilliant job in painting, carpentry and electrical work for several nights after the launderette has closed and into the wee small hours.

Our lovely colleague Mina, who most of you who use the launderette on Thursday and at weekends will know, has been off work for just over a month due to ill health. She underwent surgery on Wednesday and we’re pleased to say that the surgery went well and she’s now recovering. We hope to see Mina fully fit and back at the launderette in around six weeks.

That’s the news from Launderette Towers, here’s the stuff you want to know…

Rich Mix has a new photographic exhibition, ‘The Curry Chefs of Brick Lane’, by Jeremy Freedman in its Mezzanine Gallery. The exhibition is a celebration of these proud chefs – “working away like those engineers below deck on the great steam ships of old, they are the unseen and unsung heroes of Brick Lane’s Curry Mile.”  These are the previously unseen faces and untold stories that reveal the personal narratives of Spitalfields’ Bengali residents. The exhibition is open from 10am until the centre closes and runs until 31st March. For more details visit the Rich Mix website.

This is the last weekend to catch Simon Schama’s selection from the Government Art Collection at the Whitechapel Gallery. There are some rarely seen paintings, including the iconic portrait of Romantic poet and famous traveller Lord Byron by Thomas Phillips (1814) brought back specially for this display from the British Ambassador’s residence in Athens. The gallery is open from 11am Tuesday to Sunday, and closing time is 6pm every day except Thursday when it closes at 9pm. Two other exhibitions are also closing this weekend at the Whitechapel, Rothko in Britain and Artists in Residence, so it’s well worth a visit!
